How to Make Cold-Brew Tea at Home

When the days warm up, cold-brew tea is an easy way to enjoy loose-leaf blends with a little less fuss. Steeping tea in cool water brings out a smooth, refreshing cup that’s ready when you are.

What you’ll need

  • Loose-leaf tea of your choice
  • Fresh, cold drinking water
  • A clean glass jar or covered jug
  • A tea infuser or fine strainer
  • Ice and optional garnishes, such as citrus or fresh mint

A simple starting ratio

Start with around 2–3 grams of tea for every 250 ml of water, then adjust to suit the leaf and your taste. If you don’t have scales, use the tea’s packet directions as your guide, since leaf size and density vary.

How to make cold-brew tea

  1. Add the tea and cold water to a clean jar or jug.
  2. Cover and place it in the fridge. Begin tasting after 6 hours; many green and oolong teas are ready in about 6–8 hours, while black teas may benefit from 8–12 hours.
  3. Strain out the leaves. If you’d like a stronger brew, use a little more tea next time rather than leaving the leaves in indefinitely.
  4. Pour over ice and enjoy. Add sweetener, citrus or mint if you like.

Make it your own

Try a floral green tea such as Jasmine Rose Green Tea, a fruit-led cup with Mango Oolong, or the bergamot-inspired character of French Earl Grey. Each blend steeps a little differently, so taste as you go and adjust the time or amount to find your favourite balance.

Keep it fresh

Keep your tea covered and refrigerated while it steeps, and return any leftover brew to the fridge promptly. For the freshest flavour, make a small batch and enjoy it within a couple of days.

Cold-brew tea is simple to prepare, easy to customise and lovely to share. Pick a blend, steep it overnight, and you’ll have a refreshing glass ready for tomorrow.
