Japanese Bancha Loose Leaf Tin 120g
Discover the everyday comfort of Japanese Bancha, a traditional green tea made from mature tea leaves harvested later in the season. This approachable, mellow tea is a staple in Japanese households, valued for its smooth, gentle character and affordability without compromising quality.
What Makes Bancha Special:
- Made from larger, more mature tea leaves harvested after the first flush
- Traditional Japanese everyday tea, enjoyed throughout the day
- Lower in caffeine than premium green teas, perfect for evening drinking
- Gentle roasting brings out natural sweetness
Flavour Profile & Experience:
- Mild, smooth taste with subtle sweetness and earthy notes
- Less grassy than sencha, more approachable for green tea newcomers
- Light-bodied with a clean, refreshing finish
- Very low caffeine content
- Golden-yellow liquor with a gentle, comforting aroma
Health Benefits:
- Antioxidant-Rich – Despite being made from more mature leaves, Bancha retains a meaningful level of catechins and polyphenols that help protect cells from oxidative stress and support overall wellbeing
- Exceptionally Gentle on the Stomach – Bancha's lower tannin content makes it one of the most stomach-friendly green teas available — ideal for those with sensitive digestion, acid reflux, or who find other green teas too astringent
- Very Low Caffeine – One of the lowest-caffeine green teas, Bancha is suitable for children, the elderly, and anyone sensitive to caffeine; a rare green tea that can be enjoyed in the evening without disrupting sleep
- Alkalising Properties – Bancha is traditionally valued in Japanese macrobiotic practice for its alkalising effect on the body, helping to balance acidity and support overall vitality
- Gut Health – The polyphenols in Bancha support a healthy gut microbiome and have traditionally been used to aid digestion and ease stomach discomfort after meals
- Heart Health – Regular green tea consumption is associated with supporting healthy cholesterol levels and overall cardiovascular function
- Bone & Dental Health – Bancha contains natural fluoride and calcium, traditionally associated with supporting healthy bones and teeth — one reason it has long been given to children in Japan
Brewing Instructions:
Steep 1–2 teaspoons in water heated to 80–85°C for 1–2 minutes. Bancha is forgiving and won't become bitter with slightly longer steeping. Can be re-steeped 2–3 times. Delicious hot or iced, and pairs wonderfully with meals.
